Crewe fund bears fruit for community

A community orchard in Crewe is blossoming thanks to hard work by a local residents’ group and support from a neighbouring homebuilder. A community orchard in Crewe is blossoming thanks to hard work by a local residents’ group and support from a neighbouring homebuilder. Anwyl Homes donated £1,050 to the Sydney Area Residents Association for new fruit trees, compost and spring bulbs. The donation is one of those made from the £5,000 ‘Love from Anwyl’ funding pot to help local not-for-profit organisations close to Anwyl’s Alexandra Gardens development, on Sydney Road. The resident’s group has planted 15 fruit trees on council-owned land, designated for the local community, opposite Alexandra Gardens. Maintained by volunteers, the orchard is open for everyone in the community to visit and, when the trees bear fruit, residents can help themselves. Nicky McAra, from the resident’s association, said:
Anwyl’s funding has helped us to create this community orchard, which will benefit everyone in the local area. The residents’ association meets regularly for volunteer days, which include tending to the orchard and other general tasks such as litter picking to keep the area looking its best. There is a strong sense of community pride in the Sydney area, and we have up to 10 volunteers helping out each session, but we are always looking for more people to join in. The orchard is a lovely place for people to come and spend time in a green space. The spring bulbs we have planted should flower next year and we are planning to plant some more later this year.
Graeme Gibb, sales director for Anwyl Homes Cheshire and North Wales, said:
It’s been our pleasure seeing the orchard opposite our Alexandra Gardens development blossom. It’s down to the residents’ association’s hard work that the neighbourhood now has a lovely place to spend time, and in the future, pick fresh fruit. We were pleased we could support their efforts with funding, Love from Anwyl.
