Homebuilder takes on challenge in aid of children's hospice

Swapping safety boots for walking boots, staff from Anwyl Homes took on a Three Peaks challenge with a difference in aid of Derian House Children’s Hospice. The Chorley-based hospice is less than three miles from Anwyl’s Lancashire headquarters in Buckshaw Village and has been chosen as their charity of the year. While others race to summit the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in the quickest time possible, the Anwyl team has done things slightly differently. Area sales manager Amy Houlihan explained:
Traditionally people have taken on the challenge of climbing the Three Peaks within 24 hours, but as part of our commitment to being greener we decided to take a more environmentally friendly approach. Instead of driving hundreds of miles between the three mountains, we tackled Scafell Pike three times in one day. A team of 10 took part after training for a few months. We completed the challenge in exactly 15 hours. It was difficult both mentally and physically – the hardest thing I’ve ever done – but we were motivated by the fact that we were supporting Derian House to help families facing much worse. The charity does amazing work not only looking after the children who go there, but support the family, friends and siblings of the poorly children.
The challenge took place on June 24 – during Children’s Hospice Week. They scaled and descended the first peak in three hours 40 minutes, the second in four hours 15 minutes and the third in five hours. Between them, the team walked approximately 500,000 steps, covering more than 200km. Marketing manager Phoebe Davies explained:
The second peak was tough going – we knew we once reached the top we would be halfway through the challenge. We had signal on the mountain so were updating the rest of the company and refreshing our JustGiving page. Being cheered on by our colleagues in the office and seeing the total raised rising and rising really pushed the team on. Morale in camp was superb throughout the day with each team member cheering each other on.  We never forgot that we were there to raise money for a truly fantastic charity – Derian House Children’s Hospice.
As part of Anwyl’s year of fundraising in aid of Derian House, the company took part in a challenge which saw the homebuilder donate £50 with staff tasked with using that to raise as much money as possible. This, combined with the Three Peaks challenge has so far raised more than £10,000.
