Keen worker's new Apprentice Assistant Site Manager role at Anwyl

An apprenticeship scheme will create the route to site management for Nathan Burns as he builds a career in construction. Nathan, 22, from Leyland, initially joined Anwyl Homes Lancashire as a site operative and in recognition of his hard work, dedication and ambition was offered the role of apprentice assistant site manager. Based at Priory Gardens in Burscough, he’s undertaking a Level 3 apprenticeship in building and civil engineering at Wigan and Leigh College alongside working on site.
I worked part-time as a site operative from when I left school six years ago, including when I was studying for a degree in sports coaching. I realised I enjoy being on site and decided to push for a career in construction rather than my original goal of being a teacher, explained Nathan. I’ve gathered some knowledge and experience from working on site but there’s still a lot to learn and the team on site are helping me out.
Nathan is keen to progress in his new career and believes his experience will help.
I’ve always had aspirations that whatever I chose to do, I would go as far as possible in that career, Nathan added. I’m keen to push on and move into site management. The coaching aspect of my degree will help in future when I’m managing a site of my own. It’s important to be able to communicate with people how you want them to do something in a way that they will take in.
Job creation and career development is high on the agenda for Anwyl’s Chorley based Lancashire business, which doubled its output in the 12 months to September, completing 198 properties. It’s targeting close to 300 legal completions in the current financial year. Construction director at Anwyl Homes Lancashire Shaun Sumner said:
It’s vital that we invest in training young people so that we have a skilled workforce for the future. This will be increasingly important as the Anwyl business grows and we’re keen to nurture emerging talent. During his time as a site operative Nathan has shown excellent commitment to his role and to the wider objectives of the site. He’s expressed ambition to become a site manager in the future and we are happy to support him. He has the potential to make an excellent site manager.
