Introducing Liverpool city region
Liverpool is a city of almost half a million people, although its city region reaches even further out to the local authority districts of Sefton in the north, Knowsley and St Helens to the east, and Wirral and Halton to the south of the city.
Within this rich and diverse region, residents and visitors can enjoy all the buzz and bustle of one of the UK’s biggest cities, along with spectacular coastal areas dotted with sand dunes and forests, stately homes and sweeping parkland, quaint villages and lively towns – not to mention one of the most impressive skylines in Europe.
Liverpool is centred on its famous waterfront, where the three historic buildings on the Pier Head – the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building – are today joined by glistening new edifices, renovated docklands and an ever-developing central shopping district.
Major employers in the city region include Jaguar Land Rover, Unilever, the four universities and the Port of Liverpool, with huge ongoing developments transforming the city’s Paddington Village, Baltic Triangle and Fabric District areas where new employment opportunities continue to open up.
It’s easy to get around too, with the Merseyrail commuter trains forming the UK’s most heavily used urban rail network outside London. With extensive bus services and even the famous Mersey ferry all being part of the transport mix, there’s no excuse not to see the whole city region – from the wide-open beaches of the Wirral peninsula across to the safari park in Knowsley and up to Southport’s seaside attractions. It’s all part of loving life in Liverpool!
