Things to do in Bolton
Bolton is bordered to the north by Smithills Country Park, a 2,000-acre expanse of open countryside surrounding the historic Smithills Hall. Just a 10-minute drive from the town centre, it offers easy access to nature for all Bolton residents.
The attached museum, Smithills Hall, hosts examples of Medieval, Tudor and Victorian architecture for historic enthusiasts and educational trips. Other heritage sites you can visit around Bolton include Turton Tower, a striking turreted manor house, and the ruined foundations of Bury Castle.
The Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive is a well-rounded day trip for families, with an on-site aquarium and a comprehensive museum of artefacts. Other museums close to your new house in Bolton include the Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre and the Bury Transport Museum.
There are plenty of things to do in Bolton for adventurous and active residents, with swimming pools, gym facilities and a sauna available at the Jason Kenny Centre next to the University of Bolton. The town also has its own climbing gym at Rock Over Climbing, where you can work out with indoor bouldering challenges. On top of that, Bolton is only 20 minutes’ drive away from Chill Factore, Manchester’s only dry slope for indoor skiing.

A family-friendly gaming arcade is available at the Game Vault, while the Crazy Karting go kart track, a UK Paintball venue and the Amazonia mini golf course are all located within a short drive of Bolton.

GETTING AROUND
Transport in Bolton
Bolton benefits from its proximity to Manchester through its network of well-maintained roads. The town is surrounded by three large motorways – the M60, the M61 and the M66 – and bisected by the bustling A666. Using major routes and A-roads, you can reach Manchester in 25 minutes, Preston in 30 minutes, St Helens in 35 minutes and Liverpool in 45 minutes. The M6 is also a 30-minute drive away from Bolton, opening up a direct route to Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham to the south and the Lake District, Carlisle and Scotland to the north.
The Bolton Interchange is your hub for bus travel into Manchester and neighbouring towns. The station is located in central Bolton, just north of the train station and a short walk away from the St Andrew’s Court shopping centre. Buses leave regularly for destinations such as Manchester Piccadilly, Preston, Rochdale and Bury, as well as rural towns and villages.
Next to the Bolton Interchange, you’ll find Bolton Station, a train station located along the Ribble Valley line. It has a total of five platforms leading to Clitheroe, Southport, Rochdale and Blackpool North, and it takes 40 minutes to reach Manchester Airport by train.
