The beautiful Shropshire Hills form the heart of the county, while the wild landscapes of Wales and Worcestershire lie just a stone’s throw away. There are plenty of things to see and do in Shropshire, from bracing mountain hikes to water sports and castle tours.

Things to do in Shropshire
The Shropshire Hills span from the Welsh border to the town of Telford, offering miles of walking routes, hikes and climbing spots for adventurous residents. Plenty of ruins and museums are scattered across the park, from the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Stokesay to the House on Crutches local museum. You’ll also find a wide range of educational facilities on the border of the Hills, located in surrounding towns such as Ludlow and Telford.
The Ironbridge Valley of Invention is one of Shropshire’s headlining destinations, an open museum displaying the steampunk ingenuity of Victorian innovation. From the ruins of the Bedlam Furnaces to working miniature steam engines, the valley is designed to be a learning experience for children and adults alike.
Ludlow Castle is a surviving 11th-century fortification located in the town of Ludlow. You can book onto an archaeological tour during their opening hours, or wander the grounds to explore the castle on your own. Dogs are permitted at the castle, making it a prime spot for a culture-rich walk.
Another famous historical monument in Shropshire is at Wenlock Priory, an English Heritage site on the edge of Much Wenlock. At the priory, you can view a Norman Chapter House, see carved medieval tiles or walk around the beautiful and well-maintained Cloister Garden.
Canoeing and kayaking are both very popular in Shropshire. You can hire canoes and kayaks in Shrewsbury, where you can set off along the River Severn to explore the county from the water. A few businesses renting canoes include Shrewsbury Canoe Hire, Hire a Canoe.com and Drummond Outdoor.
Shropshire has an ironwork sculpture garden in Oswestry, where you can see a three-headed dragon and even buy your own metalwork ornaments. You can also visit the Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World just north of Telford, where you’ll see a wolf pack, servals, a raccoon dog and a wide range of owls and birds of prey.


Transport in Shropshire
Transportation options in the area, including trams, trains or buses (where appropriate). Include key motorways and major routes that pass through or near the region for those traveling by car and suggest nearby cities or destinations that are easy to reach. Provide specific travel times for popular routes, like rail service to major cities.
Shropshire’s main through-route is the A49, connecting Shrewsbury to Whitchurch and Hereford to the north and south. Other major roads connect Shrewsbury to Birmingham, Wales and Stoke-on-Trent, including the A5 and the A53.
There are 19 train stations in the county, spanning towns such as Telford, Ludlow, and Shrewsbury. Our new homes for sale in Shropshire take full advantage of these, embracing the countryside while benefiting from local railway links to London, Birmingham, and Manchester.
Shropshire’s largest train station is in Shrewsbury, featuring five platforms with services to Cardiff, Crewe, and Birmingham New Street, as well as various town and city stops along the way. You can also catch direct trains to Aberystwyth and Holyhead in Wales.
The county enjoys excellent transport links to Birmingham, putting Birmingham Airport within easy reach of our new build homes in Shropshire. You can also get to Birmingham New Street via train, car or bus, opening up further destinations across the country.
